PNA News 2006/07 School Year
May 23, 2007-Last day for PNA at all sites! Have a fun, safe, and enjoyable summer!
May 21, 2007 Book Publishing Party! Students will receive their published book by their site directors.
May 17, 2007 Read! Read! Read! John Early will host a book fair for the students who attend PNA. Al-Kebulan, a local bookstore, has agreed to donate a portion of the book sales to the John Early PNA Site. A variety of books will be available to support and encourage the value of reading.
May 16, 2007 Celebration!-PNA celebrates our ten year anniversary. Rose Park will host this event. The celebration starts at 4:30p.m. Rose Park is located at 1025 9th. Avenue,South. All PNA sites will be represented!All are invited to attend!
May 7, 2007 Hit a homerun! Bellevue's PNA students will attend the Sounds Game at Greer Stadium. Game tickets were awarded to students who participated in the Sounds Reading Club and met their individual reading goals.
April 24, 2007 Haynes PNA-The young men of Haynes has formed a partnership with college students from American Baptist College, Nashville, TN. There are many fun and exciting activities planned for these young men.
April 16, 2007 Pre-Registration for the 2007-2008 school year has started at all sites.Pre-registration will end on Friday, May 18, 2007. There is a $50.00 fee that is due every semester(August and January). Space is limited! Get registered soon at your site!
April 3, 2007 John Early will have two employees from Dell Computers to come and assist the students with building their own computer. Through the Dell Techknow Program, students who participate will have the opportunity to own the computer they constructed. *John Early will move and groove with the ladies of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. from Tennessee State University. Young ladies of PNA will be the pioneers of a newly formed Step Team.
March 29, 2007 Sylvan Park-Music to my ears! The Nashville Symphony Woodwind Quintet entertained the students with a live concert. The concert consisted of music from the artist Fantasia and The Flight of the Bumblebees. Students learned about information about the different instruments and various genres of music. Students experienced the power of music.
*Art Appreciation at Sylvan Park- Guest Art Instructor, Kathy Kohnhorst taught third and fourth graders all about the artist Georgia O'Keeffe. Students painted replicas of beautiful flowers and other art forms inspired by Georgia O'Keeffe.
March 28, 2007 Academic Excellence at Gra-Mar!80% of the students who attend PNA have received all A's and B's on their progress reports. Keep up the good work!
March 16, 2007 Future Authors and Writers! PNA through the LEAPS GRANT is promoting writing and literacy in all of our sites. Every PNA participant will have the opportunity to write, illustrate, and publish their own book at no cost. Students will submit original poems, stories, jokes, songs, and other genres of writing for publication. Creativity and individuality is strongly suggested and emphasized. Students have the freedom to choose their topics, work individually or collaboratively, and create the content. This initiative will continue through the months of March and April 2007.Books will be published and presented to students in May 2007.
March 12, 2007 Ride Sally Ride! Bellevue's PNA Students will arrive at Baskin and Robbins Ice Cream Parlor in a limousine. Students earn this incentive by displaying positive behavior, making academic progress, and cooperating with others. This event takes place every six weeks.
March 8, 2007 What's Cooking at Rose Park! Chef Anderson, a chef at Sweet 16 Bakery, has agreed to have four cooking classes at our site. The sessions focused on healthy meals that children can prepare. Students made Chinese Noodle Salad with Chicken, fruit smoothies, and a scrumptious salad. A special thank you to Chef Anderson for donating his time!
March 7, 2007 Music! Music! Music! Sylvan Park visited the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville, TN. The field trip was a very rewarding and enriching activity. Students enjoyed the scenic attractions of Music Row, guided tours, melodic sounds of different types of music, and displays. Students were still beaming with excitement from their experience at the Country Music Hall of Fame weeks later. It was a memorable trip!!!
March 5, 2007 Celebrating Cultures! McMurray hosted its yearly "International Parent Festival" featuring food, information, and fellowship from various cultures. Parents, students, community members, and special guest enjoyed the activities and performances. McMurray's parents were very instrumental in the organization of this event. This experience validated and confirmed the fact that we all share a common thread, LOVE.
March 3, 2007 Space Cadets! John Early Middle PNA 4-H students will take a field trip to the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama. Students will participate in simulations that focus on aerodynamics, space missions, research and design, and guided tours of the center. This trip will help shape and motivate our students to explore various careers and opportunities in the fields of science and technology. *New Photos have been added to John Early's PNA Website
February 16, 2007 Apollo Middle is now offering Tae Kwon Do ,Salsa Dance lessons, and aerobics to promote wellness and healthy lifestyles. Many students are gaining a new respect and understanding of the importance of diet and exercise. *New photos have been added to Apollo Middle's Website
February 3, 2007 Bellevue Middle is excited about the formation of several after school clubs in the following areas: arts/crafts, etiquettes, sports, jewelry making, Walking Sudoku Math, foreign language, ballroom dancing, and chess. Students will have the opportunity to explore and participate in all the activities during scheduled rotations.
January 28, 2007 McMurray Middle continues to challenge PNA students to expand their knowledge, build self-confidence, aim for academic excellence, and display positive leadership qualities through their Bounce and Team in Training Programs. The programs are designed to promote academic and social growth while assisting children in reaching their fullest potential by incorporating the arts and academics in daily activities.
December 20, 2006 Today was the final day of PNA for the semester. We will kick-off again on January 8, 2007. Happy Holidays!!
December 5, 2006 John Early Middle will be offering African dance and Hip-Hop classes starting on December 11.

October 26, 2006 McMurray Middle had their annual International Festival. There were more than a hundred attendees who enjoyed the delicious food and exciting entertainment. PNA students performed what they had learned in their Harmonica classes. Others danced and sang. The principal even gave a special singing performance!
October 25, 2006 Kirkpatrick Elementary teamed up with DaVita Biomed Inc, for a day of fun! The Kirkpatrick students went on a field trip to the Sheraton Music City, where DaVita was having their annual conference. While there they had a delicious buffet style lunch and were also presented with brand new bicycles built by the DaVita team. It was a fun day for both the students and for our hosts!
October 19, 2006 John Early Middle welcomed UPS for a career development day. Local UPS employees presented information on their careers, showed the students the different UPS trucks, gave out fun prizes and spent time entertaining questions. From a nurse, to a driver, to a financial officer and more, there were numerous careers represented. Thanks UPS for such a fun day!
October 2006 Sylvan Park hosted celebrated author Carla Conteras recently. She read from her book Clint Black Cat which is illustrated by children. At the celebration, the children also read from books they themselves had written. You can read more about it in the October 18 edition of The Tennessean: Davidson A.M.
October 12, 2006 PNA will be celebrating Lights on Afterschool at each of its sites! Make sure to stop by and check out one of the programs. You can get more information by contacting Cameron at cameron@pnaweb.com.
September 2006 New photos have been added to the Sylvan Park web page! The students celebrated Labor Day on the Friday before by learning about important jobs in our community.
