PNA extends our deep appreciation to the Wal*mart Supercenter on Charlotte Pike for their matching grant of $1,000 to Bellevue PNA.  This opportunity proved to be an enticing incentive for Site Director LaRayne Hodge and the kids in raising funds for new computers needed in the afterschool program.  Two Dell computers have been ordered and are en route!  Many thanks to the parents who donated money to fund the first computer, and thanks to Wal*mart for the matching dollars to purchase a second PC.  We appreciate the kindness and support of Wal*mart staff members Judy Ursery, Mark Sherrill, Angelic Pendergrass, and Bruce Willis.

Each PNA site is in the midst of planning a special event or project.  Here's a brief summary of what is currently in development:

Apollo -- Kindred Spirits grant to benefit the residents of Bethany Health Care Center.  Also, a Basket Weaving project is in the works to offset the stress during TCAP testing.

Bellevue -- A Health & Safety Fair is in development to involve local police and fire agencies in sharing and demonstrating pertinent information to parents, students, and other members of the community.

Ewing Park -- A spelling bee incorporating various interactive components such as teamwork, parent involvement, etc.

Haynes -- An International Potluck Dinner through which students and parents will acquire knowledge about particular countries and prepared dishes.

Joelton -- A Travel project incorporating various aspects of travel such as airports, countries, customs, languages, art, and ethnic diversity.

Johnson -- PNA students will research Quilt-making techniques and construct a quilt using various styles.

Kirkpatrick -- The students are studying Kenti Colors during February.  In March, the site will begin Read Me activities, inviting parents and community guests to read stories to the children.

Rose Park -- The site will study Swing Dance.

Two Rivers -- A Family Feud game pitting parents vs. PNA kids is in the works.  If the parents win, the PNA staff will volunteer to offer extended hours one evening so parents can enjoy a night out.  If the kids win?  Well, who knows what will happen...

Check back in the coming weeks for results of a music "experiment" being conducted at PNA.  Students are being exposed to classic favorites by artists ranging from B.B. King to Patsy Cline to Ella Fitzgerald to Glenn Miller to Willie Nelson.  In addition, we are including selections from composers such as Bach, Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, Mozart, and Chopin.  The idea is to monitor the effect of playing music in the background while the kids are enjoying snacks or activities.  How will this impact moods and behavior?  Will exposure to music of yesteryear invoke questions?  Will the kids think the music is boring, unusual, or perhaps even "jammin'"?  We'll let you know...

February 6, 2003

Coming Soon...PNA Interactive Learning Events.  Each site is currently working on plans to host an event to include students, parents, and special guests.  Proposed ideas include a spelling bee like you've never seen before and an interactive travel event to involve guests in a virtual airplane ride to Greece.

Congratulations and kudos to Site Director JoAnn Sebastian of Apollo PNA.  The site has been awarded a $475 grant from Kindred Spirits International to provide socks, books, gloves, music, games, and hats for the residents of Bethany Health Care Center.  Kindred Spirits commended Ms. Sebastian "on the spirit of giving that shined throughout [her] proposal".  What a wonderful way to teach PNA kids the value of giving back to the community and to those in need.  Great work, Ms. Sebastian!
