  •  Site Director Susan Hambrock is pleased to share the good news that her son T.J. received a $2,000 scholarship for excellence in ACE, a program for students who aspire to be architects, contractors, or engineers.  Congrats!

  •  PNA students Chelsea, Tierney, Amy, Kyra, and Priscilla made the cheerleading team for the 2005/06 school year.  Congrats, ladies.

Gra-Mar PNA -- We will soon finish painting our Gra-Mar Gladiators mural in the cafeteria under the direction of PNA teacher Ms. Fulkerson.  It will look like it is made from stone and also like it is breaking through the stone.  As the Gladiator busts through, if will change from black and white to color as though it is "coming alive".  This enhancement of school property has been a fun project for the PNA kids.

Haynes PNA -- Pre-registration for the 2005/06 PNA program is underway and 99% of current students have already signed up!  This is indicative of a successful, engaging program that is certainly high in demand.

Sylvan Park PNA

  •  The Nashville Ballet visited us on April 28th.  They performed a portion of Tennessee Jack and the Kudzu Vine.  This is the classic "Jack and the Beanstalk" story with a Tennessee twist.  The children had an opportunity to learn part of two character dance routines.  The first group danced as the harp while the second group learned one of Tennessee Jack's dances which included a very high "heel click".  The students and staff had a wonderful time, and we hope the Nashville Ballet team will visit us again next year.

  •  Kerry Martin, author of the children's book Gentle's Holler, is presenting a writing workshop for us and will also discuss her book.  Ms. Martin has been described as a modern-day Laura Ingalls.

May 4, 2005

Joelton PNA -- Mayor Bill Purcell visited Joelton Middle in April and recognized PNA at the event.  He explained to Site Director Deanna Short that he understands the importance of afterschool programs because his daughter benefited from them.  Following the event, Deanna commented that her interaction with the Mayor made her feel very proud to be a part of PNA.

Bellevue PNA -- We recently had a great kite day and are looking forward to more as the weather cooperates.  Parent donations continued to come in.  Thanks to the support of our parents, we will be purchasing more computers.  We also plan to purchase picnic tables to help with our spring beautification project.  The Dell TechKnow graduation was terrific!  Mrs. Fanning and the class prepared a PowerPoint presentation of the students during the course, and the parents loved it.  The kids had a fun time working on craft projects this month.  Treasure boxes were the favorite.

May 3, 2005

PNA has forged a partnership with the Adventure Science Center that enables each PNA family to receive a One Day Family Pass for free admission!  The passes are valid between May 7-14 and admit up to two adults and six children – a $58 value!  The Adventure Science Center is fun for adults and kids alike.  (We personally like the pulley that enables one person to lift a car by themselves.  The parachutes are cool too...)   Special thanks to our friends at the Adventure Science Center and their event sponsor, Captain D's, for making this possible.

May 3, 2005

Haynes PNA -- Currently underway is a service project providing lessons in grounds beautification and teaching students the importance of having a welcoming and warm school appearance.  We discuss the therapeutic and aesthetic properties of various plants and teach how to correctly plant and care for them.  20 students are participating in the tilling and planting and other students will be responsible for maintenance.  This project will take place on the grounds of Haynes Middle School in areas designated by the principal.  The project will be completed this week.

  •  On the Friday before Spring Break, we had a wonderful time at an Easter Egg Hunt.  The students found a lot of candy-filled eggs and some that had special notes in them.  Two students won $5 Wal*mart gift cards, and the big winner received a $10 gift card.  They certainly felt like they had won the "Golden Egg".

  •  The students are very much enjoying going outside and getting back to basics.  They are spending time playing volleyball, jump-rope, and kickball.  The staff appreciates the opportunity to get the kids away from electronics and back to basic games in the outdoors.

Bellevue PNA

  •  We had a fun St. Patrick's Day party with crafts, green beads, and green treats.

This report from McMurray PNA regarding their first day of the Adopt-A-Pilot program with Southwest Airlines pilot, Captain Len Paulsen...  "Our first session with our pilot went great. He bonded with the the entire group immediately. They had more questions than he could answer......everything from a kindergarten question, "How do you keep the plane from falling down?" to serious math and science questions. I think that the kids are more excited about him than any other speaker that we've had. When he left, he was very excited and had a list of plans. Next time, he will work with smaller groups."

February 22, 2005

This report from McMurray PNA Site Director Deborah Mayberry...  "We had a great time at the Adventure Science Center yesterday.  I took 58 kids.  Most of them had never been there before.  Whatever their ages, from K to 8th grade.......they all had a great time.  Janell stopped by and played with us.

But the best part for me was seeing the mass of parents waiting in the cafeteria for their children when we returned.  I saw parents that I didn't know existed.  Mr. Arnett was sitting with them and they looked all relaxed like a huge family sitting around talking.  It was a joy to see how happy parents and children looked as they left.  The parents said 'thank-you' and appeared to stand a little taller and be a little prouder of their children because they had been included in 'something special.'  I think the kids felt a little like celebreties.  You would have thought that they had just returned from a week at Disney World!"  Special thanks to our friends at the Adventure Science Center for allowing our children to experience the interactive museum free of charge.

AFTERSCHOOL CENTER SELECTED FOR

SOUTHWEST AIRLINES’ ADOPT-A-PILOT PROGRAM

Local pilot volunteers to work with children in a

city-sponsored afterschool program at McMurray Middle School

({NASHVILLE, TN})  Captain Len Paulson selected the Project for Neighborhood Aftercare program at McMurray Middle School for his participation in Southwest Airlines’ Adopt-a-Pilot program.  Captain Paulson will mentor students in this educational program that encourages students to research careers, believe in themselves, and realize the importance of achieving in school.

More than 550 Southwest pilots are volunteering in the Adopt-A-Pilot educational program.  Now in its eighth year, the Adopt-A-Pilot program curriculum incorporates science, math, geography, writing, and other subjects to help students' experience the real-life application of academics, and also to demonstrate how education is critical in reaching one's personal goals. To learn more about the program, visit: www.southwest.com/adoptapilot.

Throughout the mentorship, Captain Paulson will volunteer his time during the enrichment segment of the afterschool program.  He will correspond from the "road" via e-mail and postcards. The McMurray PNA kids will chart the pilot's course through an official U.S. route map, and the students will record daily flying statistics sent by Captain Paulson in the provided Adopt-A-Pilot curriculum.

“The PNA kids are unbelievably excited to know that a genuine airline pilot is coming to work with them on developing ideas for their future careers and to share his real-life experiences as a pilot”, says McMurray PNA Site Director Deborah Mayberry.  The program will launch at McMurray PNA on February 22nd.

Project for Neighborhood Aftercare currently operates 14 before and after-school centers, serving more than 1,100 children and families throughout Davidson County.  PNA is funded by a generous grant from Metro Government

McMurray PNA was selected to participate in the Southwest Airlines Adopt-A-Pilot program.  This four-week program packs math, science, geography, history and creative writing into a sky-high educational adventure for hundreds of classrooms across the nation.  For four weeks, students track their adopted pilot’s journey and complete curriculum developed in cooperation with the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum, the National Association of Teachers of Math and Science, and other education specialists. Students apply these subjects to aviation activities, made meaningful by their interaction with a real pilot.  We're excited and grateful that SWA's Captain Len Paulson is donating his time to work with the McMurray PNA kids on this special Adopt-A-Pilot program.

McMurray PNA -- The kids and staff at McMurray PNA launched a successful charity drive to raise funds for tsunami relief.  Pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters were solicited in the interest of supporting organizations working to protect children from exploitation in the aftermath of the tsunami disaster.  A total of $253 was raised for this purpose.  PNA is so pleased to have a wonderful leader in Site Director Deborah Mayberry who works tirelessly to teach her PNA children the value of giving back to their community and to those hurting across the world.  In addition to money, small stuffed animals were collected to send to children in tsunami-affected areas.  Two of our fifth grade girls brought a trash bag full of stuffed animals to Ms. Mayberry.  The girls were glowing and very excited. One said, "I've had one of these since I was born." The other said, "I'm giving my Christmas gift."  Wow!  This character education is certain to reap dividends in the lives of our children for years to come.  Debbie's leadership was recognized recently when Executive Director Illia Moore presented her with the 2004 Heart of PNA Award for exemplifying the spirit and mission of PNA.

Haynes PNA -- The Boy Scouts and PNA have decided to begin a new troop at Haynes Middle School.  Late last year, 90 of our students received training in basic computer skills.  The kids very much enjoyed this activity, and one of their projects involved drafting and printing a memo to Site Director Montoya Martin requesting monthly birthday parties during afterschool!  Deon Jackson, a PNA teacher, made it safely to Africa and promises to bring back proactive, exciting ideas for the program.

International parents munch, mingle at McMurray festival

By KAREN JORDAN
Staff Writer, Tennessean

It was a time to celebrate the diverse population at McMurray Middle School.

More than 400 people converged on the school last week for its first International Parent Festival, sponsored by the school along with its Project for Neighborhood Aftercare program.

In between salsa dancing lessons and indulging on food from different countries, parents were able to get to know teachers and school staff as well as meet each other.

Deborah Mayberry, a teacher and site director of McMurray's Project for Neighborhood Aftercare program, said the program was a time for international parents to not only have fun but to also overcome any hesitancy they may have previously felt about visiting the school.

''We kind of wanted to honor parents and make them feel welcome,'' Mayberry said. ''Everybody just had a big smile on their face. Whether they could speak English or not, everyone felt welcome.''

Door prizes and a free children's book giveaway were also part of the celebration, which was held in conjunction with the national observance of ''Lights on Afterschool,'' Mayberry said.

McMurray Middle School, at 520 McMurray Drive, is an ELL center with more than 30 countries represented in its student population, according to guidance counselor Beatriz Keith.

Here's a report from Regional Site Administrator Janell Wood on McMurray PNA's Lights On Afterschool event:

"Debbie, thanks so much for including me in your Lights On Afterschool International Festival. It was wonderful to see so many different people from various cultures come together out of concern for their children. You and your staff did an incredible job! What an awesome turn out! In all my years in education, I have never attended any event where literally hundreds of parents showed up. It is just proof of what we all know is true that you have such a tremendous passion for kids.

I really enjoyed the way you were able to get non-PNA teachers to participate in your International Festival. You did a great job in getting the kids involved in all aspects of the program. And it goes without saying that the variety of dishes were awesome!  Hats off to you, your staff, and your students!

Here's a special report from McMurray PNA Site Director Deborah Mayberry:  "Our first service learning project away from school was to serve dinner at the Nashville Rescue Mission.  What a great experience!  Our children spread a lot of joy.  Suddenly, we were equal and working as a team.  It touched my heart to see our little guys all in a row with aprons, gloves, and hairnets...(with some having to stand on crates to reach the food)...working nonstop until they were dripping with sweat...smiling and happy.  They seemed to instinctively not want the men to have to wait for a tray.  After we finished, the men who worked in the kitchen fed our kids and cut a special cake for them.  On the drive back to school, we discussed other things that we could do to help the men.  The parents enjoyed participating, and some of those who missed it have begged to go next time!"  What a wonderful thing it is for the youth of Nashville to experience firsthand the joy that comes in helping the less fortunate and giving back to the community!

One more good thing to note...  Our kids built a K'Nex Big Ball Tower that is currently on display at Toys 'R' Us in Antioch!

The public is invited to the following PNA "Lights On Afterschool" celebrations to be held on Thursday, October 14th:

John Early Paideia Middle School presents An Afterschool Affair to Remember!  Senator Thelma Harper will present a proclamation on the importance of keeping the lights on afterschool, and the Village Cultural Arts Center's Drum and Dance Ensemble will perform.  The school Principal, Dr. Damon Cathey, who is a PNA Board member, will also speak.  Come join us!

PNA announces partnership with the Dell Corporation!  Mr. Marc Hill, Director of the Mayor's Office for Children and Youth (as well as a PNA Board member), served as liaison forging the partnership to bring Dell together with PNA, a Metro Government-sponsored afterschool program.  We are excited to equip students with the skills needed to take advantage of the opportunities that exist in a technology-driven world!

The Dell TechKnow program is an afterschool class that teaches students basic knowledge about computers and software applications.  Students learn to assemble and disassemble computers.  In addition, they learn the names and functions of computers' subcomponents.  The children also learn to load software, to print, and to utilize the Internet.  Students who successfully complete the course receive a refurbished computer, courtesy of Dell and PNA!

The Dell TechKnow program is launching at our Bellevue, John Early, and McMurray centers on September 26th.  20 students at each site will complete the 40-hour course by the end of first semester, after which they will take their computers home!

PNA welcomes Ashley Falls as the new Regional Site Administrator.  She joins Janell Wood in the responsibility of visiting the PNA centers on a daily basis to monitor activities, assist Site Directors in program development, and report findings to the Executive Director.

Ashley is a 2002 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a bachelor's degree in Journalism and Mass Communication.  During college and after graduation, she worked in marketing, sales, and advertising. She entered into the field of education as an English/Journalism teacher at Glenn High School in Kernersville, NC.

Ashley's background in teaching brought her to PNA. She grew as a person and an instructor during her time at Glenn High School. Her only regret was not being able to reach out to the kids after they left her classroom. PNA provides that fortuitous opportunity, and she plans to take full advantage of this venture.

Ashley is new to Nashville and is excited about becoming a part of the community. She hopes to use activities and skills accrued from her past experiences to uphold and enrich the values and mission of PNA.

Afterschool Alliance Names Project for Neighborhood Aftercare’s Moore One of Just 23 ‘Afterschool Ambassadors’ in Nation

The Afterschool Alliance has selected Illia Moore, Executive Director of Project for Neighborhood Aftercare to be an Afterschool Ambassador for the 2004-2005 school year.  Mr. Moore is one of just 23 Afterschool Ambassadors selected from across the nation this year.  He will serve a one-year term organizing public events, communicating with policy makers, and building community awareness of, and support for, afterschool programs.  Illia Moore’s ambassadorship is sponsored by the JCPenney Afterschool Fund.

“In communities across the nation, afterschool programs help kids succeed in school and in life,” said Afterschool Alliance Executive Director Judy Y. Samelson.  “Illia has an impressive record at Project for Neighborhood Aftercare and in the community.  We are delighted that he will help us spread the word about the great need for more afterschool programs and the benefits they provide to the millions of children who are unsupervised after school each day.”

As Ambassador, Mr. Moore will plan a major event for Lights On Afterschool!, the Afterschool Alliance’s October 14th nationwide rally for afterschool.  “I have seen firsthand the difference afterschool programs make in the lives of our children,” Moore said.  “The need is great and nothing is more important than giving young people the opportunity to succeed and thrive.”

Apollo PNA -- We are very excited to offer dance lessons in Jazz, Tap, and Ballet for the first time!  A professional dance instructor is now a member of the Apollo PNA staff and will hold classes for the kids.  We look forward to a recital this spring.  Also, Ms. Hambrock's son, a senior at Overton High, is an excellent artist who plans to make a career in the field of commercial art or the cartoon industry.  He may come on board as a helper to teach drawing lessons.  The students are very excited about this possibility since Apollo Middle no longer offers an art program.

Haynes PNA -- Report from Site Director Montoya Martin, "Our program started off great!!  Children from the neighborhood who have heard about all the fun things we do have asked to participate.  The kids are enjoying the program, including homework time.  We are currently planning a talent show to be presented at one of the PNA parent meetings."

Joelton PNA -- A pharmacist, a school principal, and a doctor have each been invited to visit and read to the kids as part of PNA's "Celebrity Reader" program.

PNA's Research Administrator Janell Wood has posted the findings of her parent survey.  To view the summary, click the link marked "Evaluation" on the left-hand side of this page.

July 19, 2004

PNA is very grateful to Mayor Bill Purcell and the Metro Council for renewing our grant allotment!  As you know, many Metro departments and programs faced budget cuts for the new fiscal year due to a revenue shortfall.  As such, PNA's funding for 2004/05 was reduced by 15%.  Although a funding reduction is always somewhat unpleasant, the PNA Board of Directors and Administration have worked hard to restructure the budget so as to minimize the impact on program services.

Last fiscal year, PNA was able to open our 15th after-school program at McGruder Family Resource Center under the same budget established to operate 14 centers.  This stretching of dollars continues in light of the current fiscal year budget situation.  We are pleased to report that despite a funding reduction of over $90,000, PNA will continue to operate 14 after-school centers throughout Nashville and Davidson County.  Only the PNA program at Ewing Park Middle School will close.

Thanks again to the Mayor and the Metro Council for their continuing confidence in and support of Project for Neighborhood Aftercare.

PNA's Regional Site Administrator (and Research guru) Janell Wood has completed the first phase of program evaluation.  The results of her research, stemming from focus group studies with PNA students and a survey of the PNA parent population, will be posted soon.  Check back for more details in the coming weeks.
